nomination letter by Brenda Zeigenbein

My nomination for the 2002 Broodmare Award is The Smoking Black. Originally her name was Rider’s Cute Lady. Her sire is Zane’s Knight Rider S. Blackie was born in 1987 on the Irvin Mackie farm at Grovespring, Missouri. She was purchased by the Rogers family when she was a yearling. Irvin Mackie modeled her at Ava for the Rogers family and she won the Yearling Model Class. As a two year old, she was brought to Clarence Zeigenbein to train. Clarence showed her that year and won 14 straight blue ribbons with her. The next year David Rogers started showing Blackie. He won the Youth Class in his age division three years in a row, winning Reserve in the Youth Championship the first two years - finally winning the Youth Championship class the third year. In addition, Blackie won many Amateur classes. After purchasing Blackie from the Rogers family, Clarence and I showed her and had a lot of fun with her winning Champion of Champions and the Illinois State Championship in addition to many smaller shows.

Blackie has had five babies:

1)   Lad’s Sugar Doll Z. who was shown very little.
2)   Lad’s Red Rebecca Z., the 2001 World Champion Four Year Old mare and winner of the Ladies class at the 2002 Three Year Old Futurity.
3)   Black Smoke Z., the 2001 World Grand Champion Amateur Junior Model horse.
4)   Lad’s Funny Face Z., the 2000 winner of the Yearling Model class at the Two Year Old Futurity, the Three Year Old Futurity, and the Breeder’s Cup.
5)   Lad’s Peppermint Patty Z., shown in only three classes as a two year old so far in 2002 – placing each time.

In 2001 the horse I planned to ride was injured and since I didn’t have anything else set up to show, we got Blackie in and started riding her. We took her to the Three Year Old Futurity and even though she was fourteen years old, had raised five babies, and had not been rode for six years, she set back up and placed fifth in a very large Ladies class. In addition, she won classes at several smaller shows before being turned back out to be a broodmare.

The Smoking Black has always been very gentle, easy to ride, and a real pleasure to work with. Clarence has trail rode her extensively and we both showed her in 1994 and 1995. Blackie is passing on her wonderful disposition and athletic ability as well as her good looks to her foals. For these reasons, I believe Blackie is an excellent candidate for the 2002 Broodmare Award.

I thank you for your consideration.
Brenda Zeigenbein
